What is an RTO?
The **Regional Transport Office (RTO)** is a government organization in India responsible for vehicle registration and driver licensing. Each RTO has a unique code that is part of a vehicle's registration number, making it possible to identify the region where the vehicle was registered. The RTO's primary functions include:
- Issuing and renewing driving licenses.
- Registering new vehicles and assigning registration numbers.
- Collecting road taxes and other fees.
- Conducting vehicle fitness tests.
- Maintaining a database of all registered vehicles and drivers.
Decoding an Indian Number Plate
An Indian vehicle registration plate, also known as a number plate, follows a specific format that contains vital information about the vehicle. Here’s a breakdown of a typical plate:
XX 01 AB 1234
- XX (First Two Letters): This represents the State or Union Territory where the vehicle is registered. For example, PB for Punjab, MH for Maharashtra, and DL for Delhi.
- 01 (Next Two Numbers): This is the specific RTO code within that state. Our tool helps you find exactly which city or district this code corresponds to. For example, in Punjab, **PB11** is for Patiala.
- AB (Next Series of Letters): This is an alphabetical series (e.g., A, B, ... AA, AB, ...) that helps distinguish a large number of vehicles within the same RTO. Sometimes, this series is also used to categorize the vehicle type.
- 1234 (Last Four Numbers): This is a unique 4-digit number assigned to the vehicle, ranging from 0001 to 9999. Once all 9999 numbers in a series are used, the alphabetical series is updated.
Special Number Plates
You might see vehicles with different colored number plates. These signify the vehicle's purpose:
- White Plate with Black Text: Private vehicles for personal use.
- Yellow Plate with Black Text: Commercial vehicles like taxis, buses, and trucks.
- Green Plate with White/Yellow Text: Electric vehicles (white text for private, yellow for commercial).
- Black Plate with Yellow Text: Self-drive rental vehicles.
- Red Plate with the Emblem of India: The official car of the President of India or State Governors.
- Upward Pointing Arrow: Vehicles belonging to the Indian Armed Forces.
